Trekking in Nepal, do you really need a guide?

Sunset on Annapurna ©Solange Hando

Guide or no guide, mountains are fraught with danger even for seasoned trekkers.
We all remember what happened last autumn.
All the more reason then to put luck -and experience- on your side, chances may be slim if disaster strikes but better a glimmer of hope than none at all.

Great View, Keep Safe ©Solange Hando

Fortunately, major disasters are rare but what about altitude sickness or stomach problems? That's pretty frequent.
How will you cope on your own, or even with a friend? Help from locals? Sure, but in a poor country, that might cost you more than a guide would have done and be limited by lack of medical knowledge and language barrier.
What then?
Well, hire a guide and you can rest assured he will do his utmost to keep you safe and healthy for it is in his own interest as much as yours.

Anything else?
If you're into local culture, that's the best way to discover it and communicate with people along the trail. You may have the chance to rest in a farm house, enjoy butter tea and mountain potatoes straight from the embers, take photographs, meet a weaver or a schoolteacher, learn about local customs and daily routine.
Then of course, there's the natural world.
Did you see the honeycomb hanging from a branch, the blue poppy at your feet or the plant that will soothe your headache or that nasty insect bite?

Fine, but how do you know you can trust your man?
Easy, don't do it on the cheap, go to a registered agency in Kathmandu or Pokhara, explain what you're looking for and they'll have someone to meet your needs, knowledgeable, trained in hygiene and first aid and speaking your language, or at least English.

After many visits, I'd say so...
And all for $20 a day (how much was the flight?) and just think what that would mean to your guide and his family...

Enjoy and I'll see you there...

  1. trekking in Nepal is unlike anywhere in the Himalayas complemented by clear air, views of green farmland belts, forests, blooming rhododendrons, riverside walks, and most importantly because it is trekking in the ambiance of world’s highest mountain Mt. Everest . Trekking has been the most popular holiday activity in Nepal as there are the best and varied trekking routes because elevation of Nepal ranges from 60 meters above the sea level to highest, i.e. the top of the world, Mt. Everest standing tall at 8850 meters. trekkig in Nepal varies from easy and short some hour’s day hike to moderate and even challenging and adventurous long treks. 3. I just wrote a recommendation about this Independent trekking Mr Sanjib which was the one i chose to do Everest Base Camp and Gokyo, I went to Nepal in Feb-March 2014 and I would totally recommend them. Check it out and read below what i also wrote about them. Enjoy your time in Nepal smile emoticon I did Everest Base camp and Gokyo with the Independent trekking guide Mr. Sanjib and after such a nice trek I can only recommend the service that Sanjib and his team provided it. Experienced guide, a clear itinerary with lots of room for your own personal pace, a personalized approach: you go to him as a client and you leave as a friend. All this and more make the service of this trek, out of the rest. Prices are very good and the quality of all the services, were excellent. We got only great rooms and they always make sure, we have a nice view from our room (probably this is not always possible, but I like that Sanjib and Raj. were taking time in such a details to make his clients happy) He also advise you in all the matters of the trek and more importantly he was very clear about what you get. Many companies will promise you all kind of things even if they know is not possible (flying to Lukla for example is one of them or how many days you can reach certain altitude being safe from AMS) There’s a lot of companies in Kathmandu and I know how difficult and overwhelming the search for the right one can be, but if you’re reading this and looking for a person who can make your treks in Nepal smooth and a very enjoyable experience… go to Sanjib and he’ll handle the rest Thanks a lot Sanjib, for organizing my trek in Nepal and if I come back someday I definitely know where to go for treks!!

100% Safe to visit Nepal after the Earthquake Annapurna Base Camp story I was this trek on starting June 01th and Back Kathmandu 14th June 2015
Nepal is safe for traveling! According to the information from various sources such as Trekking Agencies Association (TAAN) and Nepal Tourism Board, Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp,Annapurna Circuit , Upper Mustang ,Dolpa, , Kanchenjunga Trek ,Ghorepani Poon hill, Jomsom Trek and Rara are safe for trekking, Pokhara tour, Chitwan safari tour, and Lumbini tour . Therefore, I personally went up to the Annapurna Base Camp on the first week of June. The purpose is to access the condition of the trek as to ensure the safety of the clients in the upcoming autumn season trek from September to November. The condition of the mountain is safe. All the lodges still good. The mountains still look beautiful as before. Do not hesitate to put Nepal as your travel wish list in next season. The beautiful country awaits you to visit. You support will help the country to rebuilt.

  6. Alpine Eco trek met our expectations and more on a 12 day trip to Nepal. I can particularly recommend them to travellers with children, we took our 11 year old son with us and guide Ram and porter Dhansing made his time fun and memorable. On our trek they happily played football, cricket, running races, volley ball and a table top game I don't know the name of Ram made sure everything ran smoothly, taking care of us, nothing was too much trouble. The trip was great value compared to uk based tours, Chitwan National Park very good, Kathmandu colourful and interesting, our 5 day trek to to Ghorepani was fab, but particularly for our son getting to know Ram and Dhansing will be what we remember most. The tour was private so we weren't in a large trekking group. we booked from the UK, e mails were answered quickly and the tour exceeded our expectations. If we ever go back we would be sure to go with Alpine Eco Trek, maybe Annapurna base camp next time.
